SNM Horror Magazine Interview December 2008
SNM Horror Magazine owner Steven Marshall asked me if I would do an interview for their December issue. Of course, I agreed. The interview was published on November 29th, 2009 and could be found under the heading of Crystal's Reviews. That interview is no longer on their website but you can read it below.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DOUG McINTIRE |
|
Author Pen Name: Doug McIntire |
Doug McIntire hails from central Texas. He is originally from Iowa, with about ten story publications to date in various mags and anthologies. He enjoys long rides on his Harley Davidson and also has a master of arts degree. More details are posted up on his website. He made a strong debut into SNM, receiving Second Place in a field of 41 submissions in November. He has a love for vamps.
Crystal: Hi Doug, I recently read your story, Phlebotomists Anon. Being a vamp fan, I loved it. How did you get the ideas for this story?
Doug: Well, a friend of mine was aspiring to become a phlebotomist and she carried around her textbook all the time. She would study whenever she had a free minute, and I used to tease her that there should be a support group for her. The rest of the story just fell into place.
Crystal: Being a horror writer has its perks, but are there any down sides to it?
Doug: It's a relatively small genre market and it’s kind of a hard market to break into. It’s just something you have to want and you have to be tenacious about it. Expect a lot of rejections for every acceptance you get, at least for a while.
Crystal: If you were not a writer, what do you think you would be doing instead?
Doug: I was a computer trainer for a number of years and if I wasn’t writing, I would probably be doing that. I’ve always enjoyed teaching and I still like to do it every once in a while.
Crystal: Who would you say is the most influential in your writing?
Doug: There are quite a lot of influences to my writing... Stephen King is a big one, but nearly every horror author says that. I’m also pretty partial to Robert Heinlein and Jack Ketchum. More recently, Scott Sigler has been a bit of an inspiration to me. I met him in Houston earlier this year and he really impressed me.
Crystal: What projects are you currently working on?
Doug: Well Crystal, since you’re a vamp fan, you’ll like to hear that I’m writing a vampire novel. It’s about a young botanist who accidently becomes a vamp. It puts a little bit of a spin on being a vampire, breaking some of the rules and dispelling some of the myths about it, but most of it stays true to the genre.
Crystal: Doug, you're right! I would really enjoy that one! On your website, I saw your current works in progress, which are very impressive! Do you have any other stories published at the moment?
Doug: I’ve had several short stories published, and I’m working on editing two separate novels to pitch to agents and publishers. I try to keep my website up to date about all of my writing. I also post updates on MySpace.
Crystal: I think we've just about covered everything. Is there anything you would like to add?
Doug: I’d just like to say thanks for taking the time to interview me. I’d like to encourage any other aspiring writers out there to keep working hard and don’t give up. And thanks to SNM for featuring me here, as well as my story in the November issue. I'm happy to have come in secnd place of 41 submissions!
Crystal: It was a pleasure and I am going to really look forward to your next story!
Doug: Thank you, Crystal, it was great to meet you!
Crystal: Do you have a website or a blog page where people can find out more about you and your writing?
