My Haiku

A while ago at work, we were discussing various writing styles and the subject of haiku came up. None of us really knew much about it so we had to look it up on the Internet. After discovering the rules, we started playing around with it.

Basically, the rules of haiku are as follows:

Update: I learned that someone decided that February should be National Haiku Writing Month (NaHaiWriMo). The idea was to write a haiku a day for the entire month. When I found out about it on February 2nd, I decided to participate. February 2011 is the outcome of that endeavor. But then, it was so fun, I decided to keep it up for a while. So now, I've decided to use a calendar view to keep track of my haikus.

My Older Haiku

Hibernating bears
Awaken from their slumber
— Indian Summer

  Terms of endearment
Fall from lips like autumn leaves
— Love in remission

  A soft summer breeze
Caresses a new day's dawn
— in invocation
  The spawning salmon
Die in maws of hungry bear
— River of rebirth

Alone in the snow
I fear I will freeze to death
— A winter snowstorm
  The falling rain drowns
the sound of cracking thunder
— summer thunderstorm
  The rain drops sparkle
as they fall in summer sun
— a sunny shower

A noble robin,
Perched atop the budding tree
— The first one of spring
I see your smile
I feel your laughing caress
— first summer without

  Echoing thunder
across the summer landscape
— false promise of rain
A single sunbeam
breaks through the rain-laden clouds
— the silver lining
The little squirrel
Didn't know which way to turn
— the summer babies

  Drinking mimosa
On the deck in December
— Unseasonably warm
Chill in the air and
autumn leaves blowing
— feels like Christmas
The day is rainy
— I'd like to stay in and read
But there's work to do
  My daydreaming thoughts
Reminding me of summer
— Curled up by the fire
Winter snow; spring buds
Summer rain and autumn leaves
— to each a season

  I saw two sisters
laughing out on the playground
— sharing a secret

Feet in the water
I haven't done a thing all day
— summertime doldrums
  A lazy current
in the meandering creek
— fishing without bait
  Texas in the shade
is a hundred four degrees
— it's just warming up
Rain pelting the coast
and inland for days on end
— hurricane season
The chill of the night
Replaced by the searing sun
— Texas summer still
Remnants of the cold
Lingering beyond their time
— Indian winter

To work on Monday
No more Bailey's in coffee
— Christmas is over
  Cinnamon and spice
Signaling holiday cheer
— in-home aromas
Last holiday day
Second of January
— Hangover over
